डॉ. सुनिता चव्हाण यांनी अत्यंत प्रतिकूल परिस्थितीत आपल्या वैद्यकीय कारकिर्दीची सुरुवात केली होती. त्या काळात महिलांनी वैद्यकीय क्षेत्रात, विशेषतः स्त्रीरोग तज्ज्ञ म्हणून काम करणे हे मोठे आव्हान होते. मात्र आपल्या जिद्द, परिश्रम आणि सेवाभावी वृत्तीच्या जोरावर त्यांनी रत्नागिरीत स्वतःची एक वेगळी ओळख निर्माण केली. त्यांनी स्थापन केलेल्या ‘स्वस्तिक’ आणि ‘चिरायु’ या हॉस्पिटल्समुळे ग्रामीण आणि शहरी भागातील हजारो महिलांना दर्जेदार आणि परवडणारी आरोग्यसेवा उपलब्ध झाली.
